Getting Your Hidden Window Back with the Keyboard Trick

There’s a simple trick to get around this. First make sure you’ve alt-tabbed to the window, or clicked on it once to bring it into focus. Then right-click on the taskbar and choose Move.

Note: If you’re using Windows 8 or 10 you might have to hold down the SHIFT key before right-clicking in order to get the Move menu item to show up.

At this point, you should notice that your cursor changes to the “Move” cursor, but you still can’t move anything.

Just hit any one of the arrow keys (Left, Right, Down, Up), move your mouse, and the window should magically “pop” back onto the screen.

Note: For keyboard savvy people, you can just

  • alt-tab to the window,
  • use Alt+Space, then
  • M, then
  • Arrow key, and then
  • move your mouse.

Check disk surface for bad sectors

Open a CMD console as administrator and type:

chkdsk C: /f /r /x

The “/f” parameter tells CHKDSK to fix any errors it finds; “/r” tells it to locate the bad sectors on the drive and recover readable information; “/x” forces the drive to dismount before the process starts.

copy %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Protect\ from old computer to the new one

download https://sourceforge.net/p/keepass/wiki/Recover%20Windows%20User%20Account%20Credentials/attachment/DPAPI%20migration.reg.txt

edit DPAPI%20migration.reg.txt replacing <sid> with directory name in old %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Protect\ (S-1-5-...), <username> with old username, I also replaced "computer-1" with my current computer name(maybe not important)

rename DPAPI%20migration.reg.txt to DPAPI%20migration.reg

click on reg file so Regedit can copy keys.

open administrator command prompt (Win-X key in Win10) and execute c:\windows\system32\dpapimig.exe. I had to do it twice for some reason. It will ask you for password from the old computer.

bacon time/profit! at this very moment your non working %APPDATA%\Vivaldi\User Data\Default\Cookies file magically starts working.

Disable sending downloaded windows updates to other machines in Internet

You’ll find this setting where all the other Windows Update settings now exist, in the Settings app. Open it by clicking the Start button and selecting “Settings” at the bottom-left corner of the Start menu.

In the Settings window that appears, click (or tap) the “Update & security” icon.

Click the “Advanced options” option at the bottom of the Windows Update pane.

Scroll down to the bottom of this pane again and select “Choose how updates are delivered.”

Select the option you prefer under “Updates from more than one place.”

Setting a Wifi connection as metered to avoid downloading or sending updates

You could also set your current Wi-Fi connection as “metered.” When you set a connection as metered, you’re telling Windows it’s a connection with restricted data — such as a mobile data connection or a Wi-FI hotspot from a smartphone you’re tethered to. Windows won’t upload updates on a metered connection — it won’t even automatically download Windows updates.

To set your current Wi-FI network as a metered connection, open the Settings app and navigate to Network & Internet > Wi-Fi > Advanced options. Activate the toggle under “Set as metered connection.” The current Wi-Fi network will become a metered connection.

Ask for Bitlocker password at boot

Open cmd (admin)

manage-bde c: -status
manage-bde c: -protectors -delete -type -?

lists types of protectors to delete

manage-bde c: -protectors -delete -type TPM
manage-bde c: -protectors -delete -type TPMAndPIN
manage-bde c: -protectors -add -Password

enter password for boot

Change recovery key (not needed)

Open an elevated cmd prompt

manage-bde X: -protectors -get -type RecoveryPassword

Locate the protector you want to cycle (probably the only one displayed) and copy its ID field (including the curly braces).

manage-bde X: -protectors -delete -id [paste the ID you copied]
manage-bde X: -protectors -add -rp [optionally specify the new 48-digit password or enter nothing to have it randomly generated for you]

Add a pin at boot in addition to TPM (it didnt work with GRUB)

You can set it up to use a boot pin. In Windows 11, setting up a BitLocker PIN is still possible despite some discussions online about its availability.

To enable a BitLocker PIN in Windows 11, follow these steps:

Open Local Group Policy Editor by typing gpedit.msc in the Start menu.

Navigate to

Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> BitLocker Drive Encryption -> Operating System Drives

Enable the setting

Require additional authentication at startup.

Ensure that

Allow BitLocker without a compatible TPM

is checked if your device does not have TPM.

After configuring this policy, go to the Control Panel under System and Security -> BitLocker Drive Encryption, click on your drive, and select the option to Change how drive is unlocked at startup to set your PIN.

You can disable USBs in your BIOS if you like.

To allow more complex PINs, enable

Allow enhanced PINs for startup

Move Window that is not visible in the monitor

Alt + Tab: This shortcut lets you cycle through open applications. Or click on the taskbar the program you want to move.

Once you've selected the hidden window, press

Alt + Space

and then

M

to activate the move mode. You can then use the arrow keys to reposition it. And then also the mouse.
